A NIN slip is not a NIN check. Here is the difference

Almost every candidate can produce a NIN slip. Very few employers check whether the number on it belongs to the person holding it. Those are two different things.

What a slip actually is

A NIN slip, whether printed at an enrolment centre or downloaded to a phone, is a document showing a number, a name and a photograph. It tells you what the holder says their details are. It does not tell you that the number and the person match, because a document can be edited, borrowed or recreated convincingly enough to pass a glance across a desk.

This is the single most common gap we see in household hiring. The slip was seen, everyone relaxed, and nothing was ever checked.

What a check confirms

A verification looks the number up against the national identity record and compares what comes back with the details the candidate gave you: the name, the date of birth, and the photograph on file. Either the record matches the person in front of you or it does not.

That is all it proves, and it is worth saying out loud. A confirmed identity does not mean the person is honest, experienced or suited to the role. It means you now know who they are, which is the foundation every other check rests on.

The mismatches worth pausing on

Not every mismatch is deception. Names are recorded in a different order, married names differ from enrolment names, a date of birth was mistyped years ago, and middle names are dropped. These are ordinary and usually explainable in one conversation.

Treat it differently when the photograph does not resemble the candidate, when the date of birth is out by years rather than digits, or when the person cannot answer basic questions about their own enrolment. Ask, note the answer, and do not proceed on an unresolved identity.

How to run one properly

Ask for the number rather than a photograph of the slip, get the person’s agreement first, and run the lookup through a service that records both the consent and the result. The identity check on Hirably answers within minutes of the candidate agreeing, and it is ₦2,500 on its own.
